National Museum of the Republic of Bashkortostan is one of the oldest museums in Russia. It traces its history back to 1834, when the Provincial Statistical Committee was created in Ufa. It was under this committee that its first collection appeared in 1864. At first, the exhibits were placed in one of city’s gymnasium auditoriums, and in 1867 the museum moved to its own building. The museum kept samples of soils, dyes, wood species, cloth, canvas and yarn, as well as wood products, models of various agricultural and hunting tools and machines. Today it is a scientific and methodological center and the largest museum in the republic with 190,000 exhibits kept here. Part of them are displayed in 34 exhibition halls in 9 different branches.
