It was named after Gavriil Batenkov, a December 1925 uprising participant, mathematician, engineer, social commentator and writer who became one of the pivotal personalities in the political, cultural and academic life in Kaluga. The Museum is located in the 19th century wooden house where Batenkov spent the last years of his life.

In the last century the house accommodated communal flats but later the building was handed over to the Local Lore Museum with thorough restoration work subsequently performed by the museum specialists. Currently a large-scale standing exhibition devoted to the 240th anniversary of the Kaluga county takes place in The Batenkov House. The exhibition displays various items of great rarity including personal memorabilia belonging to Gavriil Batenkov.
