The largest tank battle of the Second World War took place on the territory of the Prokhorovsky district in July 1943. It is now known as the Battle of Prokhorovka, but the engagement was part of the wider Battle of Kursk.
In memory of this event, on April 26, 1995, the Decree of the President of the Russian Federation “On the Establishment of the State Military Historical Museum-Reserve ‘Prokhorovka Field’” was signed. Its total area is 35 hectares. It includes 26 memorial plaques and objects.
In 2010, the museum “The Third Battlefield of Russia” was opened as part of the complex. The main role in the exhibition is given to memorial items of the participants of the battle: personal belongings, medals, photographs, and weapons.
In 2017, the Museum of Armored Vehicles was established as well. Its unique permanent exhibition is dedicated to the history and development of tank building.
The museum “The Battle for the Weapons of the Great Victory” was inaugurated on July 12, 2020. It exhibits the work of home front workers during the Great Patriotic War.
