The ‘Museum of Nature and Man’ is the oldest museum in Yugra. It was founded in 1932 to study and preserve the historical, cultural and natural heritage of the region. The first exposition tells the story of natural resources, old and new way of life of local peoples. The exhibition was based on items received as a gift, acquired by museum staff or transferred to them by government agencies.
Today the museum with ‘Archeopark’ and stationary exhibitions has become a unique project that covers history from the beginning of life to the present day. The archive of the museum contains about 175 thousand exhibits, and they are enriched in the annual paleontological, biological, archaeological, ethnographic and historical expeditions. Some of the finds, including the mammoth’s vertebra pierced by the weapon of an ancient man, have no equivalent in the world.
