The museum opened in 2014 in the historical part of Derbent, one of the oldest cities of Russia. The museum presents the history of confessional culture and art of Dagestan.
Tolerance and cultural exchange form a way of life in Derbent. For many centuries, people of various nations and confessions have lived in peace and harmony. The main task of the museum is to unite the experience of world religions in a cultural context, to show their similarities, to instill religious tolerance and respect for the traditions of others.
The exhibition of the museum consists of sections of pagan, Buddhist, Jewish, Russian-Orthodox, Armenian-Gregorian and Islamic cultures. The museum works at the intersection of several disciplines and areas: history, ethnography, religious studies, cultural studies and art history.
The specially created exhibition hall hosts thematic exhibitions, displays of visual and photographic art, and exchange and loan shows from museums and private collections in Russia and around the world. The museum constantly expands its collection, conducts research projects, educates the public, organizes scientific conferences, and prepares special programs for children and young people.
