Museum of the History of the Town of Sovetsk was founded on April 6, 1987 as a branch of the Kaliningrad Regional Museum of History and Art. On August 22, 1992, it welcomed its first visitors.
The museum exhibition reflects the highlights of the centuries-old history of the town: the foundation of the Teutonic Order by the knights, obtaining the town’s rights from Prussia’s first duke Albrecht of Brandenburg, the conclusion of the Tilsit Peace Treaty by the emperors Napoleon I of France and Alexander I of Russia and the King of Prussia Friedrich William III, as well as the events of the First and Second World Wars.
The postwar history of the town, which was given a new name of Sovetsk, is reflected in the exhibition “Sovetsk. The beginning of biography”. It is based on the items donated to the museum by the families of the first settlers who came to Sovetsk from different regions and republics of the USSR.
