The Museum of Arts and Culture of the Novgorod Land is located in the historic center of Novgorod, on the territory of the Desyatinny Convent, a monument of history and culture of the 14th–19th centuries. In 1994, it started working as an Art Center. In a few years, it grew into a state museum with a unique collection.
Until 1994, icon painting and applied arts workshops were located on the territory of the Desyatinny Convent. On the initiative of Galina Viktorovna Gavrilova, a regional educational Art Center was opened there. On its basis, the museum began to form from the very first days.
Artifacts and documentary materials for museum funds were collected. The leading artists of Novgorod presented their works to the Center, laying the foundation for the future collection. In the same year, the first exhibition was held and 27 Novgorod masters of fine and decorative arts took part in it.
In 2002, the Center received the status of a state museum, and since 2001 it has been receiving state funding.
The museum formed a permanent exhibition “Cultural Heritage of the Novgorod Monasteries”, which demonstrates the history of 25 monasteries of Novgorod, the preserved and restored buildings, paintings and graphic works. The multimedia exhibition “Museum Workshop of Porcelain” is based on the museum’s collection of Novgorod porcelain. The interior of the hall, made in the form of a horn, creates the atmosphere of an old factory. Visitors can get acquainted with the process and technologies of making porcelain products using interactive displays.
The number of exhibitions of various scales which are held at the same time has expanded from four to nine. In the main building of the museum, two to six exhibitions are open simultaneously.
A special area in the museum is allocated for various events.
