The City Duma Museum was established as a museum of local lore in 1879. The credit goes to the local historian Ivan Yakovlevich Slovtsov, who had brought along part of his collections when he was sent to work in Tyumen. The development of the museum was also promoted by numerous representatives of the local intelligentsia, merchants, and prominent public figures. The museum continues to open new exhibitions with items not only from its own funds but also from private collections.
The exhibition “Window to Nature” demonstrates the diverse flora and fauna of the Tyumen Region. A small natural history museum can be considered an integral part of the City Duma Museum of Local Lore. The collection includes complete skeletons of mammoth, bison, woolly rhinoceros, and cave bear.
The exhibition “Tyumen — The War — The Great Victory” is dedicated to the remarkable feats of labor and combat demonstrated by Tyumen citizens during the Great Patriotic War. The visitors will learn about the work of industrial enterprises and hospitals evacuated to Tyumen, as well as the life of Tyumen citizens who distinguished themselves on the fronts of the Great Patriotic War. They will also visit the recreated interior of the bathing train car.
An interesting exhibition is devoted to the striking clock, which was commissioned by the City Duma and made by a local peasant in 1857. The craftsman Alexey Trusov created his design based on the project of Moscow mechanics — the Butenop brothers.
