The museum-diorama The Battle of Kursk. The Belgorod Axis is one of Belgorod’s major sights, a centre of military and patriotic education. Its personnel carefully keep documents and memory about those who took part in the battles during the Great Patriotic War in this area. The Battle of Kursk is one of the greatest in the history (it started on July 5 and finished on August 23, 1943) that changed the course of World War II radically.
The diorama construction work began in December 1984 and finished within a record short time in November 1985. The hall of combat glory was solemnly opened on May 9, 1985. In this hall the museum staff organized a temporary exhibition where unique photographic materials pit on display. When the festivities timed to the Victory Day were over, the exhibition was closed until full completion of the work.
The museum in Belgorod was opened on August 4, 1987. On the same day, texposition On Scorched Earth was opened for visits. The Arch of Fire canvas is the biggest diorama in Russia. It is based on real events, the tank battle that took place near the village of Prokhorovka in 1943.

Painters of the M.B.Grekov studio worked on its artistic design. Among them there were V.Scherbakov, N.But, G.Sevastianov. The total area of the canvas is amazing — 1005 sq.m. Diorama’s height is 15 m, length is 67 m. Behind the diorama’s main building there is a viewing site where military equipment employed in the Battle of Prokhorovka is on display.
