The Mordovian Republican Museum of Visual Arts named after S. D. Erzia is an important cultural and educational center of the Volga region. The museum was opened on January 10, 1960, and was then known as the Mordovian Republican Picture Gallery named after F. Sychkov. In 1976 a new building was constructed, and since 1995 the museum bears the name of Stepan Erzia. In 2014, a renovation took place that made the museum look up to world museum standards.
The main collections are the works of classics of national art culture — the sculptor Stepan Dmitrievich Erzia and the painter Fedot Vasilyevich Sychkov.
Currently, the museum collection includes over 16,000 items. More than 60,000 people visit the permanent exhibition every year.
In 2002, the museum was declared a particularly valuable object of cultural heritage by the Government of Mordovia. In addition to the main building, the museum includes several branches, among them the House-Museum of S. D. Erzia in the village of Baevo, Ardatovsky district, and the House-Museum of F. V. Sychkov in the village of Kochelayevo, Kovylkinsky district.
