The Minusinsk Museum is one of the first public museums in Siberia. It was opened in 1877 by a Russian scientist Nikolay Martyanov, who became its first director.
The Minusinsk Museum of Local History funds include more than 200,000 items, which reflect the nature of the region, as well as the historical and cultural heritage of the peoples who live in the upper and middle Yenisey River areas. The museum houses photographs and glass negatives showing the life of the Khakasses and Tuvans at the turn of the 20th century, as well as religious attributes of shamanism and Buddhism, and household items. The museum library, which was established in 1878, contains rare books and unpublished documents of the late 19th century expeditions.
There are three departments in the museum — the art gallery, the Decembrist movement museum and ‘The Apartment of G.M. Krzyzanowski and V.V. Starkov’ historic house museum.
