The idea of creating a museum in Kozlov came to the minds of a group of intellectuals in 1903. The artist S. I. Krivolutsky was the initiator and chairman of the committee for setting up an art and industry museum.
During Soviet times, two museums were opened in Kozlov: the Science Museum and the Art and History Museum. In 1929, they were merged into the Kozlovsky District Museum, which was renamed the Museum of Local Lore in 1930. Once again, the name of the museum was changed when the town of Kozlov was renamed Michurinsk. In 1967, the museum was awarded the title of the “Best Museum of the RSFSR.”
The Michurinsk Museum of Local Lore has several halls: Military Glory, History of Kozlov-Michurinsk, Nature, History of the Orthodox Church, the Great Patriotic War, and Honorary Citizens of the town. Regular art exhibitions are held in the halls of fine arts. The museum has a library of rare books. Its collection consists of more than 20,000 items.
In October 2015, a branch of the museum opened dedicated to I. V. Michurin, the scientific activities of his pupils and followers and the modern achievements of Michurinsk as a science city.
