The Kyakhta Museum of Local Lore is one of the oldest cultural institutions in Siberia and the Russian Far East. The region’s economic prosperity led to the establishment of educational institutions and healthcare facilities and promoted interest in local nature, history, and culture.
As a result, a museum of local lore was founded in 1890, and four years later — the Troitskosavsk-Kyakhta Office at the Priamursky Department of the Imperial Russian Geographical Society.
The museum staff has collected extensive materials on the history and nature of the South-Western Transbaikalia and adjacent areas of Eastern Siberia, Mongolia, and other neighboring territories.
The museum houses over
120,000 items, including unique archeological collections, specimens of local flora
and fauna, and items that formed the basis of the Russian-Chinese trade in the
18th and 19th centuries. The collection of documents and photographs
includes about 5,000 items. The museum also takes pride in its rare book collection
which features over 30,000 unique books and maps.
