The Kurgan Regional Museum of Local History is the largest repository of historical, cultural and nature / science collections in the Kurgan region. It was opened on November 10, 1951, in the building of the Faithful Saint Prince Alexander Nevsky Church. Today the main building of the museum is located in the former House of Political Education.
The museum’s holds contain 40 collections that cover the entire timespan from the primeval tribes to the present day. The standing natural exposition has over 200 species of animals and birds at display. In the Museum’s history halls, you can see the archeological finds, learn about the settlement of the Region’s territory, familiarize yourself with the major local folk crafts and find out about the industrial development of the region and its life during the revolutionary years.
Currently the Museum consists of five branches and a planetarium, which first appeared in Kurgan in 1957.
