The Kurgan Regional Art Museum was founded in 1982. Despite its young age, museum funds count more than 10,200 artifacts. It’s the only museum in the region which has a collection of works by Russian painters made in the 20th and the early 21th centuries. There are works of acknowledged artists of the early-to-mid-20th century, such as Pyotr Konchalovsky, Aleksandr Deyneka, Grigory Shegal, Vitold Byalynitsky-Birulya and others. The department of art of the 1950s — 1980s includes works by Pyotr Ossovsky, Vladimir Stozharov, Sergey Tkachov, Kim Britov.
The gem of the collection is a series of watercolour paintings indicating a 100-year period of development in this kind of visual art. The unique works by Artur Fonvizin, Lev Bruni, Leonid Soifertis, Vitaly Goryaev are in the collection. Also the collection illustrates the specifics of the national schools of ex-Soviet republics.
Applied and Decorative Arts department includes Russian traditional crafts and Trans-Uralian artistic craftworks along with icon painting and book printing.
