The Velikiye Luki Museum of Local Lore was opened in February 1919 with the name of Museum of Reference Material. Its primary goal was to ‘provide unequipped schools with reference material’ manufactured in the museum workshops, but soon it began to receive the first exhibits. During World War II, it was destroyed, and its reconstruction began from scratch in 1950.
Now the Velikiye Luki Museum of Local Lore has three exhibition halls, and its collection spans more than 40,000 items. In the museum, you can see archaeological finds, artifacts from the Patriotic War against Napoleon, the two World Wars, the Revolution, and the Civil War, as well as the history of the city from when it was founded until the present day.
