The museum’s fund was based on the collections amassed by Irina Petrovna Gorskaya. The first exhibit in her collection was a list of members of the Pechora—Ob Expedition of 1913. Irina Gorskaya led the local history club at school No. 2, where the group of lectors “Northern Lights” examined the collection, and the town headquarters of the local history expedition “My Homeland is the USSR”. The Labytnangi Museum of Local History was opened in 1995 in honor of the 20th anniversary of the town. Irina Gorskaya became its first director.
For 11 long years since its foundation, the museum did not have a permanent address: the town vocational school No. 21 and a dry cleaner’s served as temporary accommodation. In 2005, the museum team was headed by a young creative specialist, an expert in museology and monument protection Nadezhda Vladimirovna Tolkanova. In 2007, the museum moved to a new building with modern equipment. The museum staff had the opportunity to offer excursions and develop museum education programs.
