The Arkhangelsk Museum of Fine Arts was founded on August 29, 1960. Its collection is comprised of exhibits from the regional museum of local lore and works of ancient Russian art. It also includes paintings by Russian artists that the Academy of Arts transferred to Arkhangelsk in 1916 and exhibits donated by the Russian Museum in 1930.
In 1994, the Arkhangelsk Museum of Fine Arts, together with other historical sights of the Arkhangelsk Region, was transformed into the State Museum Association “Art Culture of the Russian North”. It houses thousands of exhibits: household items of the nobility, as well as paintings, drawings and sculptures created from the 14th century to the present day.
