The State Museum of the History of Russian Literature is the largest literature museum in Russia and one of the largest museums of this type in the world. Over the years, the museum has gathered one of the most impressive collections of books, manuscripts, and personal belongings of famous writers, as well as artworks. It has also become a center for the study of Russian literature and an expertise center for other museums. Nowadays, its collection includes over half a million artifacts which have formed the basis of more than ten memorial exhibitions.
One of them is the Alexander Herzen House Museum.
It is located in an Empire-style mansion that was constructed near Arbat and
Prechistenka in the 1820s. Alexander Herzen and his family moved into the
so-called “Tuchkov house” in September 1843 and lived there until they
emigrated in January 1847.
