The Gorlovka Art Museum was opened on April 26, 1959. The collection started with 217 works — gifts from artists from Moscow, Kiev, St. Petersburg and other cities. Boris Vladimirovich Borodin, a resident of Gorlovka, who later became the first director of the museum, was responsible for collecting works for the museum.
Among the enthusiasts who took part in the creation of the museum and the completion of its collection were Soviet artists Viktor Ivanovich Sakhnenko and Ivan Antonovich Tikhy, as well as Konstantin Georgievich Todorov and collector Felix Evgenievich Vishnevsky. Later, the museum’s funds were replenished with accession from the Directorate of Art Exhibitions in Moscow and Kiev, and also with donations from residents of the city and Soviet artists.
Currently, the collection of the Municipal Budgetary Institution “Gorlovka Art Museum” contains more than 3,600 paintings, sculptures, graphics, decorative and applied artworks. The jewel of the collection are the works of Nicholas Konstantinovich Roerich.
