The Glazov Museum of Local Lore is a modern museum center featured on the list of “Leading cultural institutions of Russia”. The museum presents the history of the Cheptsa River area from ancient times to the present day.
The Glazov Museum is a local history museum of the first category. It is located in the historic building of the Glazov Women’s Gymnasium and celebrated its centenary in 2020.
The museum houses about 40,000 exhibits in its collections. Among them are primitive tools, tools used in the Iron Age, remains of ancient animals, pagan amulets, national homespun clothing, authentic photographs, paintings, commemorative coins, musical instruments, furniture and jewelry.
The museum publishes collections of postcards, guidebooks, booklets and books. The museum has six exhibition halls dedicated to the medieval settlement of Idnakar, the history of Glazov and Glazovsky District, traditional urban and peasant way of life and crafts, as well as two famous people: the Moscow Art Theater actress Olga Knipper, Anton Chekhov’s wife, and Pyotr Fyodorovich Tchaikovsky, the grandfather of the great Russian composer Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky. Olga Knipper was born in Glazov and Pyotr Fyodorovich Tchaikovsky served as mayor of the town. The main exhibition of the museum, “Historical Glazov”, was formed in 1987 on the basis of research and archaeological expeditions.
