The Far Eastern Art Museum is the largest museum of fine art in the region. It opened in Khabarovsk in 1931. At the same time, almost a hundred years ago, the foundation of the collection was laid. It was formed of the masterpieces from the collections of famous museums in Moscow and St. Petersburg (Leningrad at the time).
At present the Far Eastern Art Museum has more than 16,000 exhibits. These are unique works of Russian and foreign fine art, works of art created by peoples of the Amur region and the North of the Russian Far East.
The collection of Russian art in the museum is represented by icon painting (late 15th — early 20th century) and works by such academic masters as Aivazovsky and Repin, Surikov and Kuindzhi, Levitan and Kramskoi.
Among the works of foreign art, of particular artistic value are genuine pieces of antique glass and ceramics, graphics by Dürer, Rembrandt, Callot, paintings by Titian, Veronese and other great artists.
The museum pays much attention to studying and promoting Far Eastern classics — the works by Alexei and Stepan Fedotov, Vasily Vysotsky, Boris Shakhnazarov, Georgy Lee Girsu, Nikolai Muravlev and so on.
Over the past 15 years, the museum has held more than 500 exhibitions of all kinds.
