The Chelyabinsk State Museum of Fine Arts was founded on June 6, 1940, when the city art gallery was opened in the building of the Alexander Nevsky Church. In 1940, the gallery received 106 paintings and drawings from the State Russian Museum.
Nowadays, the museum’s collection contains world class masterpieces, among which are paintings by Dmitry Levitsky, Ivan Shishkin, Ivan Aivazovsky, Ivan Kramskoy and Isaac Levitan. The collection of ancient Russian art of the 16th — 19th centuries is represented by icon painting pieces of various schools, including the Ural icon, as well as a selection of copper-cast plastics, manuscripts and early printed books.
