The Bryansk State Ethnography Museum is one of the oldest in the region. It opened in September 1921, and its first Director was an archeologist and local ethnographer Sergey Deyev.

During the WWII, the museum collection of more than 2,000 exhibits was completely lost to be partially restored by 1949. The year is now considered the museum’s “second birth year”.

The museum exhibits archeological finds from early man sites and early Slav settlements, ancient manuscripts and printed books, hoards of silver coins, cold weapons and firearms, amour and horse harness dating to different periods. The museum collection has the rifle owned by author Alexey Tolstoy and the sword owned by the family of poet Feodor Tyutchev.
