The Belgorod Museum of Folk Culture was established to study, research and inventory the samples of folk culture of the Belgorod region. Its heritage is a valuable collection of authentic household items and folk art. The museum was opened on the initiative of the regional administration in 1996.
To create a cultural institution of this kind required meticulous collecting and research work, including numerous research trips. As a result, the museum staff managed to build and acquire an impressive collection of antiquities and works of folk art. Currently, the museum’s collections include more than 20,000 items.
The permanent exhibition was designed by Moscow artists and designers. The museum was first housed in the reconstructed building of the former city club “Stroitel”. Later, it was moved to an old building, which is one of the monuments of architecture that has long attracted the attention of researchers and local historians. The museum building was constructed at the end of the 19th century and for a long time was known to Belgorod citizens as the House of the merchant Pivovarov, or, later, the cinema “Orion”. In addition to film showings, gymnasium balls and charity evenings were held in the cinema building.
The street where the museum is located is also noteworthy. It is on this street, the main artery of the city, that life used to buzz. In the early 20th century, all three city cinemas, the biggest printing house, the best hotel, the city council, a bank, three churches, and many commercial and public establishments were located there.
