The opening of the Belgorod Literature Museum, a branch of the Belgorod Local History Museum, took place on April 26, 1999.
This is one of the major research and educational centers of the region, the purpose of which is to collect, store, study and popularize the history of the development of the local literature. The exhibits are all to some extent connected with the work of writers, critics, journalists, and bibliographers who lived on the territory of the modern Belgorod region, and natives of the area from the 18th century to the present.
The opening ceremony of the museum was attended by the head of the Belgorod region administration Yevgeny Stepanovich Savchenko, Ioann the Archbishop of Belgorod and Stary Oskol, and a group of Russian writers, including Valery Nikolayevich Ganichev. The guests also became the first benefactors of the new institution. Later, participants and winners of the All-Russian Literary and Patriotic Readings “Prokhorovskoye Field” became honorary guests of the museum.
On September 1, 2008, the museum courtyard welcomed a monument to an enlightenment writer, inspired by the image of Vladimir Stepanovich Zhukovsky, who was a founding member of the Belgorod Organization of Writers.
In April 2012, in connection with the reorganization of the Belgorod Museum of Local History and Local Lore, the Literature Museum became one of the state-funded cultural institutions. It became a separate legal entity in October 2012.
The museum’s structure includes departments of administration, organization of expositions and exhibitions, accounting and storage of collections, educational work, and development of the museum.
