The Astrakhan State Joint Historical and Architectural Museum Reserve is among the oldest Russian regional museums. It was the first Provincial Museum opened by Governor Ivan Timiryazev’s resolution in 1837. The museum was closed in 25 years, but, in 1874, the replenishment of the collections was resumed. In 1897, the Astrakhan Petrovsky Museum greeted its visitors.
The Astrakhan Kremlin was affiliated to the museum in 1974. Nowadays, 14 museums have been joined under the museum reserve umbrella. Five of them are located in the city of Astrakhan, and nine ones are in the districts of the region. The museum has restoration and art workshops, a taxidermy lab, and a carpentry shop. The collection amounts to over 300 thousand exhibits: archaeological finds, coins, and samples of flora and fauna of the region.
