The Museum of Fine Arts of the Republic of Karelia has recently opened a new section in its permanent exhibition, “The Universe of Kalevala”.
The epic poem “Kalevala” is a true national treasure. The poem has had a significant impact on the development of Karelian and Finnish languages, literature, culture, and the national identity of these two peoples. Its deep and timeless themes, motifs, and images serve as a source of inspiration for writers, artists, sculptors, and composers from various countries.
The new exhibition features over
one hundred artworks from the museum’s “Kalevala” collection, including female images
by Tamara Yufa, narrative works by Boris Akbulatov, watercolors by Georgy Stronk
and Osmo Borodkin, linocuts by Myud Mechev, paintings by Nikolai Bryukhanov and
Vitaly Dobrynin, and etchings by Yuri Lyushkin. Some of the works are being displayed
for the first time, such as illustrations by Nina Rodionova and Viktor Tauber,
drawings and etchings by Igor Baranov, and bookplates by Konstantin Kalinovich.
Exhibits are marked with AR stickers for identification purposes.
