The main exhibition is displayed in Ivan Aivazovsky’s mansion built in 1846 by the painter. The exhibition features a large number of battle paintings showing the heroic deeds of the Russian fleet, Crimean landscapes, and works inspired by the artist’s numerous voyages. Aivazovsky left an enormous oeuvre: during his long life he painted about 6,000 pictures with 4,000 of them depicting sea.
Eventually, the gallery founded by the artist became a real school of marine painting. Today, it houses over 400 pictures by Aivazovsky illustrating his art at various stages: from the timid beginner’s works during his years at the Academy of Arts to magnificent paintings by the mature master.
