“Old City” is an exhibition at the Lipetsk Regional Museum of Local Lore. It is dedicated to the history of Lipetsk from the late 18th to the early 20th century. The exhibition features authentic artifacts that tell the unusual story of this city in the Tambov Governorate, its residents, and events inextricably linked to the history of the entire country.
At the turn of the 19th century, Lipetsk experienced a defining moment. It became the first resort in the Central Black Earth Region. The Lipetsk Mineral Waters resort was officially opened by decree of Emperor Alexander I in 1805. It quickly became popular among the Russian nobility, as trips to Western European health resorts were impossible due to the ongoing wars. For more than a century, Lipetsk was known primarily as a resort. Although it was smaller and less populous than many neighboring cities, life there was in full swing, largely because of the tourists.
In 1909, the Lipetsk Society for the Spread of Scientific and Practical Knowledge named after Peter the Great initiated the establishment of a museum, an archive, and a library in Lipetsk. These organizations eventually grew into regional cultural centers.
Exhibits are marked with AR stickers for identification purposes.
