Over three centuries of its existence, the Central Naval Museum has accumulated a large number of valuable items that reflect the most important events in the history of the Russian Navy. The collection houses over 700,000 exhibits, including over 13,000 pieces of shipboard equipment, more than 11,000 pieces of cold weapons and firearms, over 62,000 works of visual art, more than 56,000 articles of clothing, awards, decorations, flags, and banners, over 44,000 documents and manuscripts, around 300,000 photographs and negatives, and thousands upon thousands of sheets of technical drawings.
The museum houses one of the world’s largest collections of ship models that is the perfect illustration of the history of Russian and international warship building. The museum takes special pride in the famous botik of Peter the Great known as “the grandfather of the Russian navy”, the original submarine of 1881, and other rare exhibits.
The museum houses paintings by Ivan Aivazovsky, Alexey Bogolyubov, and Alexander Beggrov and sculptures by Mark Antokolsky and Pyotr Klodt. Foreign marine art is represented by the works of Robert Ker Porter, Louis Caravaque, Ferdinand Perrot, Jacob Philipp Hackert, and other artists.
