By examining the artifacts on display at the exhibition “Rybinsk in the 19th and Early 20th Centuries, ” one can gain an understanding of how the city transformed from a relatively small settlement into the second-largest town in the governorate after Yaroslavl. Visitors will learn how and through whose efforts new buildings were erected, commerce was developed, and banks, factories, schools, and more were established.
The Rybinsk Museum-Reserve is housed in a former stock exchange building. The Rybinsk Stock Exchange was among the first in Russia and one of the largest grain exchanges on the Volga. In the 19th and early 20th centuries, the exchange’s committee was regarded as one of the city’s most influential forces.
Most individuals who improved
and modernized Rybinsk in the 19th century were members of the
merchant class. The museum displays portraits of merchants and discusses
merchant dynasties.
Exhibits are marked with AR stickers for identification purposes.
