The permanent exhibition of the State Historical Museum was opened gradually from 1997 to 2006. It presents the chronological history of Russia from the Stone Age to the early 20th century.
The Historical Museum presents the first Russian coin (the gold “zlatnik” of Prince Vladimir Svyatoslavich), objects associated with the history of the Battle of Kulikovo in 1380, the hairshirt cilice of Ivan the Terrible, which he wore during the years of the “oprichnina” and the ceremonial saber of Prince Dmitry Pozharsky, who led the People’s Militia in 1612.
The exhibition also displays historical monuments of the 18th–19th centuries: personal belongings and portraits of Russian emperors, public and state leaders, military leaders and prominent figures in culture and science.
