Exhibits of the Belgorod State Historical and Local History Museum introduce the visitors to the history of the region from ancient times to the beginning of the 20th century.
Archaeological excavations in the Belgorod region confirm that Scythian settlements existed here from the 6th to 3rd centuries BCE.
In the 8th to 10th centuries, the Saltovo-Mayaki culture was formed in the region by the tribes of Alans and Bulgars, who were part of the Khazar Khaganate.
In the 16th century, raids by nomadic tribes posed a threat to the heart of the Russian state — Moscow. To defend the southern borders and settle traditionally Russian lands, the government decided to establish strongholds — fortresses where peaceful residents could seek refuge. Built in 1596, the fortress city of Belgorod became a major stronghold of the Russian state.
Another thematic section of the exhibition is dedicated to the defense of the Motherland during the reign of Peter the Great.
In 1727, Belgorod became the
center of the extensive Belgorod Governorate.
Exhibits are marked with AR stickers for identification purposes.
