Alexander Grigoriev Art and History Museum was founded in 1919. It was named after the artist and its founder Alexander Vladimirovich Grigoriev in 1920.
40 paintings by Kazan artists Pavel Alexandrovich Radimov and Grigory Antonovich Medvedev formed the basis of the collection. These paintings were brought to Kozmodemyansk in 1918 as part of the Volga-Kama traveling exhibition. Over time, thanks to the efforts of Alexander Grigoriev, the collection was enriched with works by other artists. Paintings also came from the State Museum Fund.
Alexander Grigoriev Art and History Museum has a valuable collection of Russian paintings. It presents not only the main stages of art development, but also a rich variety of genres.
Today the main exhibition and
collections contain more than 1200 paintings and more than 1750 graphic works.
Much attention is paid to Mari artists. The art of the region is widely
represented — from the works of the first Mari artists to those of modern
painters.
