The exhibition “History and Culture of the Jews in Russia” presents a wide variety of everyday objects and culture of the Jews in Russia, ranging from a children’s toy and a ceremonial cup to the Torah case and a tombstone.
The Jewish people in the Pale of Settlement created a unique culture that combined their own ethnicity and the traditions of the local peoples. The Jews of Ukraine, Belarus, the Caucasus and Central Asia share the same roots, but have developed in different ways. The exhibition presents clothes, ritual items, personal belongings, documents and drawings of Ashkenazi, Georgian and Bukharian Jews. They make Jewish traditions, beliefs and spiritual principles easier to understand.
How did the Jews preserve their communities in conditions of social inequality? How did their traditional costume change if they had to pay a tax for the right to wear it? How many accessories were devised for the Torah Scroll, which could not be touched with hands, and what did Jews write in the marriage contract? The exhibition of the Russian Museum of Ethnography “History and Culture of the Jews in Russia” tells about all this.
