The Khanty-Mansi Collection of Russian Art includes icons of the 15th to the 19th centuries and paintings of the 18th to the 20th centuries. Exhibits make it easy to trace the evolution of fine arts in Russia over five centuries.
The display showcases the Novgorod, Rostov, Yaroslavl and Vologda icon painting schools. It comprises a vast iconography of the Mother of God, images of Nicholas the Wonderworker and Saint George, and the Rostov icon Resurrection — Descent into Hell with 64 marginal scenes, which was largely influenced by West European art.
The section featuring paintings of the 18th to the 20th centuries exhibits rare portraits, landscapes, genre and historical tableaus. Those are works of renowned masters: Fyodor Rokotov, Vassily Tropinin, Ivan Aivazovsky, Alexei Savrasov, Arkhip Kuindzhi, members of the Union of Russian Artists, etc.
